Edwin Hubble
The Hubble Space Telescope floats
against the background of Earth after a week of repair and upgrade by
Space Shuttle Columbia astronauts in 2002.
Hubble’s fourth servicing mission gave the telescope its
first new instrument installed since the 1997 repair mission
– the Advanced Camera for Surveys. It doubled
Hubble’s field of view and records information much faster
than Hubble’s Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2.

EDWIN HUBBLE
Edwin Powell Hubble, (1889-1953), was an American astronomer whose work
revolutionized our understanding of the size and structure of the
universe. In the early 1900's, many astronomers believed that all stars
and other celestial objects were part of the Milky Way, the galaxy that
contains our solar system.
Hubble
was born on Nov. 20, 1889, in Marshfield, Missouri. He earned a Ph.D.
degree from the University of Chicago in 1917. In 1919, he joined the
staff of the Mount Wilson Observatory in California, where he remained
until his death on Sept. 28, 1953. The Hubble Space Telescope, launched
by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1990, was named
in his honor.

| Work on Hubble Continues |
STS-125
mission specialist John Grunsfeld is about to attach a tether during a
May 16, 2009, spacewalk to perform work on the Hubble Space Telescope.
This was the third of five planned spacewalks for the mission.

The Hubble Space Telescope
stands tall in the cargo bay of the space shuttle Atlantis following
its capture on Wednesday, May 13, 2009. The STS-125 mission began a
series of spacewalks the following day to service Hubble. Over 11 days
and five spacewalks, Atlantis' crew will make repairs and upgrades to
the telescope, leaving it better than ever and ready for another five
years--or more--of research.

Finds Hidden Exoplanet |
In 19 years of observations, the
Hubble Space
Telescope has amassed a huge archive of data--an
archive
that may contain the telltale glow of
undiscovered extrasolar planets.
Such is the case with this image--one
of three extrasolar planets
orbiting the young star
HR 8799--which is 130 light-years away.

Pretty as a Picture
The
Hubble community bids farewell to the soon-to-be decommissioned Wide
Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. In
tribute to Hubble's longest-running optical camera, a planetary nebula
has been imaged as WFPC2's final "pretty picture."
This
planetary nebula is known as Kohoutek 4-55 (or K 4-55). It is one of a
series of planetary nebulae that were named after their discoverer,
Czech astronomer Lubos Kohoutek. A planetary nebula contains the outer
layers of a red giant star that were expelled into interstellar space
when the star was in the late stages of its life. Ultraviolet radiation
emitted from the remaining hot core of the star ionizes the ejected gas
shells, causing them to glow.
In
the case of K 4-55, a bright inner ring is surrounded by a bipolar
structure. The entire system is then surrounded by a faint red halo,
seen in the emission by nitrogen gas. This multi-shell structure is
fairly uncommon in planetary nebulae.
This
Hubble image was taken by WFPC2 on May 4, 2009. The colors represent
the makeup of the various emission clouds in the nebula: red represents
nitrogen, green represents hydrogen, and blue represents oxygen. K 4-55
is nearly 4,600 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus.
The
WFPC2 instrument, which was installed in 1993 to replace the original
Wide Field/Planetary Camera, will be removed to make room for Wide
Field Camera 3 during the STS-125 mission.
During
the camera's amazing, nearly 16-year run, WFPC2 provided outstanding
science and spectacular images of the cosmos. Some of its
best-remembered images are of the Eagle Nebula pillars, Comet
P/Shoemaker-Levy 9's impacts on Jupiter's atmosphere, and the 1995
Hubble Deep Field -- the longest and deepest Hubble optical image of
its time.
